Easter Projects
March 23 2009
Start growing your own vegetables
A small vegetable plot could supply vegetables all year round for less than £50, according to charity Gardening Organic. Apart from saving money it can also be very relaxing! Here are a few rules to help get you started:
Find a compost that is labelled ‘seed compost’.
Add water to it until it feels damp.
For an easy method, try direct seeding by either poking a hole in the compost with your finger or creating a shallow furrow in a straight line, placing the seed and then pressing the soil firmly over it to avoid air holes. Space seeds apart as recommended on the packet and water when finished.
With some greens like lettuce, you can just scatter the seeds on the ground or compost, shake some soil or compost over the seeds and water lightly. What could be easier!
Cook something yummy with the children
If you are already thinking of ways to keep them entertained during the Easter break, and they will be asking for a cheeseburger, how about cooking one together with the kids, using this delicious recipe:
Per person, use 3 to 4 ounces of lean minced organic steak, chopped onions (fried separately), wholemeal bread bun, side salad, grated organic cheese to melt over the beef, and organic mayo. You can even buy organic tomato ketchup now!
Method
Chop the onions and fry in a little olive oil (or oil of your choice) until golden brown. Turn off the heat but leave in the pan
Squeeze the meat together in your hands, into a ball. Then put it on a plate (use this one just for the raw meat) and flatten with your hand into a burger shape. (Let everyone do this and put them together on the plate).
Fry the burgers each side and round the edges until cooked right through (about 6 mins each side, but cut open and check as it has to be cooked through to brown, not pink.
When cooked, place in the bread bun, add the brown onions, grated cheese and tomato ketchup or mayo to taste. You can also chop up a gherkin if you want to! Eat with side salad preferably!
As an alternative, you can always try ostrich steak (just a small one) from our fabulous ostrich farmers in the UK. Check out this website selling delicious ostrich meat
