Made In The U. K ?
January 28 2010
A current legal loophole means that meat products can be labelled 'made in the UK' even if the meat was imported, as long as it has been packaged or processed in some way in the U.K.
A television programme recently also noted that we are paying more for these products in our supermarkets as the lovely British public try to support British farmers, and also want to eat meat that has been reared with the highest standards of animal welfare.
Now they have been found out there is some good news! There will now be voluntary code of practice among the four biggest supermarkets, manufacturers and farmers to ensure that pork products clearly state where the animal was born, reared and slaughtered.
If you want to be totally reassured that the meat is British - shop at Sainsburys. They have been selling British meat before any media stories informing the public about the legal loopehole we mentioned have pushed them into it - well done Sainsburys!!
