Farming - Growing British Food Or Fuel?
May 06 2007
It is predicted that British farming will become more profitable as farmers are asked to grow biofuel crops. Although I am not against this in principle, many farmers are telling me that they are being paid to grow hedgerows and have targets to improve wildlife, but they are NOT being paid to grow food or rear animals and they are very unhappy about this.
I too am extremely concerned. I know that farming practices in the UK are second to none, and our animal welfare is exceptional. Although I am concerned about wildlife, I am also concerned that the food that I feed my children has been grown to strict standards and high levels of animal welfare. I do not want all of my food to have been imported.
I want to eat food that has been GROWN in Britain, not just PACKED In Britain. Are we being conned? Are we so unconcerned about animal welfare in other countries? We found the rearing of veal calves cruel in this country and banned it, so what do we do? We import it!! What is the difference?
We must not close our eyes to the fact that farming is now being taken over by the government. The forms that they have to fill in are worded in psycho-politico babble that you need a degree in to understand. Another cost for farmers who now have to employ experts just to fill in what should be straightforward forms in order to receive their payments.
If you want to eat food and know that it is grown under strict safety guidelines and that the animals have been cared for, then please write to your local MP and ask them to make sure that they lobby for British GROWN food and not just packaged food.
Look after our farmers. If they are hung out to dry as they have been over the last ten years, and the rate at which farmers are forced out of business by the supermarkets continues at the same rate, then farms will not exist, and the countryside will not look as it does. No-one will have fields of cows and sheep as pets – they are way too expensive!! The countryside will become a playground for the rich city people and property developers.
Our farmers care for animals and for the countryside, but lobbyists are powerful and shout louder and the gentle farm folk just go out of business. We can stop this, but only by contacting our MP. I’m sorry that this is a bit of a rant but I do not believe that most of us actually understand just how close we are becoming to a nation of imported everything. Go ahead …do your bit.
