Protect Our Honeybees And Sign The Soil Association Petition Today
July 10 2009
We have all heard that honeybees are dying at an alarming rate, and this is extremely worrying for us all, as honeybees are needed to pollinate most food crops
The Soil Association is calling on Hilary Benn, the UK's Secretary of State for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs to ban neonicitinoid pesticides with immediate effect, as these pesticides have been shown to kill honeybees and are thought to contribute to the recent devastating increase in honeybee deaths.
Neonicotinoids have been withdrawn in France, Germany, Italy and Slovenia and the Soil Association research has resulted in enough evidence to justify an urgent ban in the UK today.
For more information and to sign the petition please visit the Soil Association (bees) website.
To help honeybees survive, you can also plant lavender, clover and wild flowers in your garden together with other bee-friendly flowers. You can also have your own bee-house. Get a piece of hose (around 40cm,16 inches long), place one end under an inverted plant pot and cover the base of the pot and tube with soil. Place a flat stone or slab over the top of the pot (to stop rain getting in (make it heavy enough not to blow off in a strong wind), and there you have a little bee-house!
